This is my grandmother. I call her Laolao because she is my mother’s mother. She was born in China in 1938 during a time shaped by instability, conflict, and an uncertain future.
After the passing of her own mother, my great-grandmother, she wrote 不会忘却 (Bù Huì Wàngquè) an account of their experiences during China’s War of Resistance in WWII. It is told through the eyes of A Hui, a five year old girl whose family is forced to flee their home, becoming refugees in their own country. Tens of millions of people in China shared a similar fate during this period.

A work across generations
Laolao wrote this work to honor her late mother, whose strength and resilience ensured the survival of their family. Today, I am translating and publishing this piece to carry her legacy forward and to preserve a story that might otherwise be lost.
This story reminds us of the often overlooked resilience of women and children and echoes the displacement and struggle that continues to affect families around the world today.
